Natural Hazards in Australia

Students will prepare a report on ONE natural hazard that affects Australian environments, researching ONE specific CASE STUDY. The report must use appropriate geographical terminology and visual/graphical aids

Outline/Description of Task:


The task should be typed OR neatly hand written and presented in the form of a report. Your report should focus on one natural hazard in AUSTRALIA looking specifically at ONE CASE STUDY of how this natural hazard has affected Australia’s environment. Your report should address the following points

  • Name the hazard, the location in Australia it has affected and the date of its impact
  • Geographical processes which are relevant to the outbreak of this natural hazard
  • Preparation and prevention methods in place in the community affected
  • The impact on the community- economic, social and environmental impacts.
  • Responses and recovery processes undertaken by individuals, the community and the government after the hazard struck.

*YOUR REPORT should total approximately 4 pages.

*YOUR REPORT should include a variety of visual aids such as maps, photos, diagrams and graphs to demonstrate issues.

*You must include a full bibliography of all sources used, direct quotes must be correctly referenced and any reports containing plagiarised content will receive a ZERO mark.


You should write your report under the following HEADINGS:

  1. Name of hazard
  2. Location
  3. Date
  4. Geographical Processes
  5. Preparation and Precaution Methods
  6. Economic Impacts
  7. Social Impacts
  8. Environmental Impacts
  9. Responses of Individuals
  10. Responses and Recovery Processes of Communities
  11. Responses and Recovery Processes of Government

  • You should also include a brief introduction and conclusion to enhance your report.
  • Ensure to include a variety of visual or graphical aids which assist in highlighting your knowledge on the topic.

  • select and use a range of appropriate written and graphic forms to communicate geographical information, specifically looking at one case study, in the form of a report.
  • clearly explain the geographical processes that form and transform Australian environments in a natural hazard

11 - 15
  • select and use some appropriate written and graphic forms to communicate geographical information, specifically looking at one case study OR writing in the form of a report.
